Sawmill Saturday brings attendees to look back at one of history's most innovated creations [Photo by Daniel Sheeman]

Innovation can be found in the most unlikely places. The sawmill is one of those innovations, the invention came from a response on how to make a quicker way of handling lumber which would be helpful for farmers, woodsmen or for the family fire. Riverbend Park recognizes this “turn of the century” technology that has helped provide an efficient and productive way to the what we have today and invites the public to its recreated farmstead that contains sawyers that will cut and plane logs into boards.

The earliest recorded sawmill was the Hierapolis sawmill during the times of the Ancient Greek. The Hierapolis Sawmill was water powered and contained a gear train with two frames that cut rectangular blocks by the way of connecting rods and, through mechanical necessity.

Riverbend Park is a scenic natural area offering activities such as hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing and picnicking. The park’s trails wind through wetlands and forests and along the Loxahatchee River and provide glimpses of birds, turtles, alligators and other wildlife.
